i mean…..you are unfortunately probably correct, but this is all still pretty dumb stuff for status monkeys.
the entire management consulting racket has been purely a political CYA tax—mostly independent of any “business transformation” or “strategy” value—for at least 15 years.
reading “that tax will be even higher going forward” when Robo is more than capable of generating the actual strategic/implementation blueprints makes me want to bang my head into a desk.
AI is not there yet, but once it can offer outputs that are trustworthy and reliable it'll provide a more objective legitimisation than humans for touch decisions. Of course, those at higher levels will still control the inputs (for now). The consulting company will still exist to manage models and inputs,, but the number of consultants will surely reduce drastically.
Even if GPT-∞ generated a flawless strategy deck, the CEO would still need a socially sanctioned adult to stand in front of the board, absorb the political risk, and translate model noise into an actionable story. That adult is McKinsey. AI changes the inputs, not the sociology of decision rights.
AI kills entry level jobs - experience, social networks, connections are needed to develop the context required to add value to decisions. How does that happen when the routine work is done by machines?

Sounds like it's CYA all the way down.

That sounds like it was written by an AI.
Well said.
The Company was invented so partners could invest in projects, with limited liability.
The Corporation was created to demote partners to shareholders.
Consultants removed the last check on management.
"Boards and CEOs hire them to bless moves already being contemplated, creating political cover."
Exactly.

The core assumption here is that the value equation for MBB will stay the same in this changing context.
A large part of why they were relevant and trusted is because of the perceived competence of their teams and leadership.
If that competence is commoditised, what differential value do MBB have that makes them trusted advisors ?
AI maxis misunderstand everything about humanity, probably because they're a bunch of stem-brained incels.
Yes, but McKinsey just kills companies IMHO.
